The Syro-Malabar diocese of Palai, Kerala, formally established on 25 July 1950, bifurcating the eparchy of Changanacherry, traces its origin to the community founded by St Thomas, the Apostle. The diocese, comprising an area of 1,166 sq km, has 63,167 Syrian Catholic families with 3,46,250 members.
